Salmon Patties

I used to have these all the time growing up. Mom used to make them all the time. It wasn't until just a few months ago, that I actually made them myself. I'm kicking myself for waiting for so long. They are so incredibly easy, and flavorful.

My husband had never had them before I made them, and he now asks for them all the time. I've also subsitituted tuna in for the salmon. Still very awesome. It is hard to determine which we like best.

So, by request, here is my Salmon Patty recipe:

Salmon Patties

1 can salmon ($2.08. Ouch! Walgreens has these on sale constantly for $1.59)

1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped onion (.15)

1/2 cup chopped celery (.07)

2 eggs (.24)

1-1 1/2 cups dry bread crumbs or crumbled crackers

salt and pepper

I will be honest, I flipped out when I seen the salmon. I will warn you, it's ugly. And scary looking. Personally, I take all the bones out and I wash off the skin remnants. It kinda freaks me out a bit.

Crumble up the salmon and combine with the onion and celery. Lightly beat eggs and mix well with salmon and salt and pepper. Once mixed, throw in the bread crumbs or crackers.

Once you have everything mixed up form into patties. It depends on what we are having for a side on how big I will make them..so just use your own judgement. You should be able to get 4 pretty good sized ones. Heat up griddle or a pan and fry until browned and warmed/cooked throughout. (Here we go with the timing thing again! :) If I were to guess, I would say that the whole cooking process took me no more than 15 minutes.)

If you want to make Tuna Patties, just add tuna instead of salmon.

Total Cost: Roughly $2.60

My mom made these ALL the time and I loved them. Unfortunately my hubs hates fish :(

I've never had them but they sound great! I'm having a blog party tomorrow. You should come by and bring this! Thanks for sharing. I'm gonna try this!

My mom made these when I was little. She also made a rather scary sounding salmon cheese ball (but yummy tasting). She would pick out the bones and we would eat them. Don't ask me how she convinced us they were a treat, but to us they were.

BAHAHAHA Salmon is ugly isn't it? I've made a version of these for years. I drain the salmon, take out that bigger round bone that's a back bone/spine I think, but I leave the skin and tiny bones. If you mush it up you can't even tell!

Becca-
I've heard that the bones are good for you..loads of calcium. I cannot eat any form of meat that is close to bone..kinda freaks me out. That us why I pull all of 'em out.

The very first time I opened a can of salmon...years ago...I threw it away because I thought I bought the wrong kind! It is well worth the little work..but I TOTALLY know what you mean! :)

I'm trying this tonight! We have salmon that I froze - knowing that salmon doesn't freeze well but should be okay in a casserole or as patties. . . I'd forgotten about it!

I make these quite frequently (my recipe is slightly different than yours; I put in only 1 egg, but I also put in Worcestershire sauce and some flour to hold the patties together). I have found the packets of salmon at our grocery store on sale a lot. I buy two of the pouches and that makes enough for dinner for the 4 of us. I usually serve with mashed potatoes and it's yummy. For me, the pouches are worth it because there is no skin or bones to mess with. I absolutely hate that part of salmon patties so anything that makes me eat more fish without the pain and agony is worth a few extra pennies (for me anyway).
